Auckland Airport has witnessed a substantial rebound in travel activity in 2023, with figures nearing pre-pandemic levels, indicating a resilient recovery in both domestic and international sectors. This follows a significant downturn during the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw numbers plummet in 2020 and 2021, according to Auckland Airport traffic updates.
International travel bounces back
In 2023, the airport recorded 4,355,471 international arrivals and 4,232,224 international departures, excluding transits. These numbers show a remarkable recovery, approaching the peak travel activity observed in 2019, which saw 5,275,521 arrivals and 5,226,030 departures. The transit movements have also increased significantly to 693,834 in 2023 from just 16,542 in 2021, reflecting a restored global connectivity at Auckland Airport.
Domestic flights near record numbers
The domestic sector has similarly seen a strong recovery. In 2023, domestic arrivals reached 4,148,274 and departures at 4,105,936, closely trailing the numbers from 2019 which were the highest recorded by the airport. The return of domestic travel has been boosted by lifted restrictions and renewed confidence among local travellers.
Aircraft movements on the rise
There has also been an increase in aircraft movements. International aircraft movements rose to 49,866 in 2023 from a low of 16,691 in 2021, and domestic movements have similarly improved to 104,206 in 2023 compared to 69,453 in the same year.
Looking ahead: Continued growth expected
The airport anticipates continued growth in travel figures as more international routes reopen and airlines increase their flight frequencies. Despite a promising recovery, the airport remains cautious about the global economic situation and potential health advisories that could affect travel trends.
