Auckland Airport is set to revolutionise its transport infrastructure with the opening of the first stage of its new Transport Hub at the international terminal on Wednesday, 3 April. This marks the most significant change in the airport’s transport system since its inception nearly 50 years ago, offering over 320m of new undercover kerbside drop-off and pick-up space, according to a media release from Auckland Airport.

The big picture: The Transport Hub's ground floor, which replaces the 1977 international terminal ground-level car park, spans over 14,000m2 and introduces separate lanes for public and commercial traffic. This development is part of Auckland Airport's major infrastructure projects aimed at creating a more efficient, modern, and sustainable arrival and departure experience for travellers.

What’s new: Features of the Transport Hub include:

  • A 200% increase in kerbside drop-off and pick-up space.

  • Prioritised lanes for public transport and commercial vehicles.

  • Integration with future mass rapid transit options.

  • Parksmart Gold and 5 Green Star sustainability design.

  • The closure of the inner terminal road, a first in 50 years, to facilitate further enhancements.

The completion of parking levels above the ground floor is anticipated by late 2024, with further developments in support of the new domestic terminal on the horizon.

Zoom in: Auckland Airport CEO, Carrie Hurihanganui, highlighted the significance of the Transport Hub, noting its role in facilitating an easier and more welcoming point of arrival and departure. The Hub is designed to manage the expected 650 vehicles per hour at peak times and is seen as a step towards the new integrated domestic terminal.

  • Sustainability and design: The project emphasises environmental responsibility with a 1.2-megawatt rooftop solar array and five 25,000 litre rainwater tanks to support the office building and Transport Hub operations. Furthermore, the surrounding pedestrian walkways and landscaping will feature native planting, including mature pōhutukawa trees, enhancing the unique Aotearoa New Zealand feel.

Looking ahead: The completion of parking levels above the ground floor is anticipated by late 2024, with further developments in support of the new domestic terminal on the horizon. The airport has embarked on an extensive programme of projects to prepare for a successful build, including upgrades to essential utilities and the terminal front door.

The bottom line: The Transport Hub is poised to dramatically improve the convenience and efficiency of travelling to and from Auckland Airport's international terminal, underscoring the airport's commitment to enhancing customer experience and environmental sustainability.
