In response to the ongoing severe drought conditions, the Coalition Government is extending its drought assistance measures, initially set for Marlborough, Nelson, and Tasman districts, to now include Canterbury and Otago regions, Agriculture Minister Todd McClay said today.

The big picture: This expansion of support is a direct response to the prolonged dry conditions that have significantly impacted farmers and growers in these areas. The classification as a medium-scale adverse event unlocks essential support mechanisms, including tax relief and considerations for Rural Assistance Payments by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD).

  • Zoom in: During a recent visit to South Marlborough, McClay engaged with local farmers, witnessing the harsh conditions firsthand. The feedback from these communities highlighted the tangible benefits of the classification, providing them with much-needed support channels.

Details: The Government is allocating up to $70,000 to Rural Support Trusts across North, Mid, and South Canterbury and Otago. This funding is aimed at bolstering community support and providing individual assistance to the affected agricultural sectors. This is in addition to a previous allocation of $20,000 to the Top of the South Rural Support Trust, ensuring early intervention and support were available.

Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson echoed these sentiments, noting the significant challenges faced by the farming communities due to the drought. The lack of significant rainfall over the weekend further exacerbates the situation, with many farmers resorting to using their winter feed reserves earlier than planned.

  • What's happening: The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has been proactively working with various stakeholders to mitigate the effects of the El Niño weather pattern, which has been a contributing factor to these conditions. Despite these efforts, the need for additional support is evident, prompting this latest government action.

The bottom line: Farmers and growers in Canterbury and Otago in need of assistance are encouraged to reach out to their local Rural Support Trust by calling 0800 787 254. The government remains committed to supporting the agricultural sector through this challenging period.
