Government outlines next steps in action plan to boost economy and public services

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on Tuesday announced the Government’s forthcoming action plan, aiming to continue the momentum of positive changes across New Zealand by June 30. The plan prioritises rebuilding the economy, restoring law and order, and enhancing public services, following the successes of their initial 100-Day Plan.

The big picture: A government of action

Luxon emphasised the government's commitment to making significant changes that positively impact New Zealanders' lives. Highlighting achievements like the ban on phones in schools leading to more focused learning, the removal of the "Ute Tax" providing tax relief to farmers and tradies, and the introduction of additional security in hospital emergency departments reducing violence, Luxon said, "I am proud to lead a government of action."

What’s happening: Focus on key areas

The action plan outlines several critical steps:

  • Implementing a budget that cuts wasteful spending and invests in frontline services.

  • Offering tax relief to hardworking New Zealanders.

  • Setting targets for public service improvements, particularly in education and health.

  • Launching an Attendance Action Plan to increase school attendance.

  • Restoring the Three Strikes law for serious, repeat offenders.

  • Establishing a Regional Infrastructure Fund to stimulate economic growth.

  • Reforming financial regulations to aid home-buyers and improving the rental market.

Zoom in: Economic rebuild at the core

A significant portion of the plan is devoted to economic measures, such as boosting renewable electricity investment and reforming the Resource Management Act (RMA) to reduce red tape for farmers.

"Much of the action plan is focused on rebuilding the economy," Luxon said, highlighting the importance of a robust economy in improving living standards and funding public services.

The bottom line: Delivering for New Zealand

Luxon assured that New Zealanders would see real benefits from these initiatives, reiterating the government's focus on delivery. "New Zealanders expect and deserve delivery from their government, and that is exactly what they are getting from us," he concluded.
