Labour vows to tackle inequality, setting sights on national engagement

Labour Leader Chris Hipkins criticises the National Government's approach, promising a dedicated effort to discuss New Zealand's pressing issues with the public.

Hipkins contrasted this with Labour's inclusive vision, promising that Labour would be "making it very clear over the next two-and-a-half years that the only party with a vision for New Zealand is Labour."

In the wake of perceived increasing inequality and division under the National Government, Chris Hipkins, the Leader of the Labour Party, has committed to directly addressing the challenges facing New Zealand. Speaking after the Labour Party Caucus's strategic retreat at Brackenridge, Wairarapa, Hipkins outlined a plan to reconnect with the electorate and refine the party's policy direction, according to a Labour media release.

Rebuilding with resilience

"It's not easy losing an election, and Labour has work to do to get back to where we want to be as a party," Hipkins acknowledged, emphasising the unity and resolve within the Labour Caucus to emerge stronger and more aligned with the needs of New Zealanders. "This Labour team is one I am honoured and excited to lead," he said.

A proactive approach to policy

In his commitment to fostering a collaborative policy development process, Hipkins announced his intention to "attend every Labour Party regional conference between May and June" to ensure that the party's future policies are shaped by the voices of its members and the broader public. This step is seen as crucial for Labour to "build strong policy foundations" without rushing the process, aiming for policies that reflect the true desires of New Zealanders.

Criticising the current government

Hipkins didn't shy away from criticising the current National Government, stating, "What we are seeing right now from National is a government with everyday Kiwis at the bottom of their priority list." He contrasted this with Labour's inclusive vision, promising that Labour would be "making it very clear over the next two-and-a-half years that the only party with a vision for New Zealand is Labour."

Engagement and inclusivity at the core

"Our current focus is on building strong policy foundations and getting work underway. It's not a process we plan to rush, rather one we want to get right," Hipkins further elaborated on the party's methodical approach to policy development, highlighting the importance of engaging with New Zealanders to ensure their wants and needs are central to Labour's agenda.
