TVNZ is preparing for extensive coverage of the historic coronation of King Charles and the Queen Consort with a diverse range of engaging programs and documentaries scheduled to air across TVNZ 1, TVNZ+, and 1News Online, according to a media release issued today.
The multi-platform coverage will allow viewers in New Zealand to join in the once-in-a-generation celebration.
Leading up to the coronation, TVNZ's programming will delve into the life of the future King Charles III. On Friday, May 5, The Repair Shop: King Charles Special (7:30 PM, TVNZ 1) will feature HRH The Prince of Wales discussing his passion for preserving heritage craft skills with the show's experts. Following that, My King Charles III (8:30 PM, TVNZ 1) will offer an intimate look into the life of the prince, exploring his early years, his relationships, and his role in the royal family. King Charles III: A New Era (9:40 PM, TVNZ 1) will conclude the evening with a never-before-seen interview with the King's former butler, Grant Harrold, offering an insider's perspective on the new monarch.
On Saturday, May 6, TVNZ 1 will feature an assortment of documentaries and musical events showcasing various aspects of royal life. The day begins with Platinum Party at the Palace (10 AM, TVNZ 1), a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II's reign, followed by Fergie & Meghan: Inconvenient Royals (2:05 PM, TVNZ 1), Catherine Our Queen in Waiting (3 PM, TVNZ 1), and Charles and the Women Who Could Have Been Queen (4 PM, TVNZ 1).
The coronation coverage, 1News Presents: Their Majesties' Coronation, will air on Saturday evening at 7 PM across TVNZ 1, TVNZ+, and 1News.co.nz. Hosted by Melissa Stokes and Daniel Faitaua, the program will offer viewers a front-row seat to the excitement and ceremonial proceedings in London. Europe Correspondent Mei Heron, Australia Correspondent Andrew Macfarlane, and other 1News team members will provide live reporting from various locations.
As the coronation commences, TVNZ will join the BBC's coverage of the day's events, from military movements to the formal processions leading up to the Westminster Abbey service. Highlights of the coronation will be available on Sunday, May 7, at 3:20 PM on TVNZ 1. The celebrations will conclude with The Coronation Concert (8 PM, TVNZ 1) on Monday, May 8, featuring performances by an eclectic lineup of stars including Take That, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Andrea Bocelli, Sir Bryn Terfel, and Freya Ridings.
